Protection

You should not trust your log home to just any builder, painter or power washer. It is important to choose a contractor who is experienced in dealing with the special requirements of log homes. At Sun-Rise, we pride ourselves on being Log Home Specialists and we provide complete care for your log home. Log home builders choose us to prep and stain their newly constructed homes. After construction, new logs must be cleaned to remove mill glaze and any dirt or contractors marks. A minimum of two coats of tinted stain with a clear top coat for UV protection should be applied. Good quality stain will protect the logs while still allowing the wood to breathe. Some brands of stain will seal the logs, trapping moisture and causing decay. Other stains do not penetrate the log, providing inadequate protection.

Keep in mind that new logs are often still "green" even if they have been winter cut and allowed to dry. This is why it is extremely important that the stain used allows the logs to breathe and continue to dry.

Stains come in a wide range of transparent, semi transparent and opaque shades. It is important that the that product used is a stain and not a paint. Paint is not absorbed into the wood and lays on the surface where it soon begins to peel or flake off.

Three applications of stain will provide a deep, rich finish and protect the logs from the harmful rays of the sun and damage from rain and snow. Unprotected logs are subject to growth of mildew and algae which will cause the logs to turn an unsightly black.

At Sun-Rise we use only top quality products to achieve top quality results. When applying stain to our customers homes, we have seen first hand how many finishes promoted as long lasting and maintenance free simply do not live up to our expectations, even when applied strictly to manufacturers recommendations. We believe that the Weatherall line of wood care products surpasses all other finishes that we have used. For this reason, we have chosen to become the distributors of Weatherall in Ontario. We feel that if given the opportunity you will discover that Weatherall is a superior product, providing a beautiful, natural looking finish which really does last. Weatherall offers a full line of products, both interior and exterior. Please contact us for more information and ordering information.
