Maintenance

Once your logs are stained, regular cleaning and maintenance is extremely important. Wood is a natural, organic material, and as such it is part of natures cycle. Unless wood is protected it will begin to decay upon exposure to fungi, bacteria, insects and the elements. Weathering is a common problem with log and wood buildings. Over  time, and with exposure to the elements, stain will break down leaving wood unprotected.

Ultraviolet radiation, dust and dirt will cause exposed wood to gradually wear away, and the growth of mildew and fungi will give wood a dark gray blotchy look. If left unprotected, some wood can show considerable weathering within a single season. Weathered, damp wood is an open invitation for insects such as carpenter ants.

Log homes should be power washed and scrubbed annually to clean the walls and to prevent growth of mildew and fungi. Power wash the logs once a year to remove any dirt.

Damaged stain should be removed and a quality stain re-applied properly, along with a clear UV protection to protect the finish. In areas where there is high exposure to sun and wind, touch-ups may be necessary. On average, you can expect your log home to need an additional coat of stain every 3 to 5 years.

Regular cleaning and maintenance is less costly and time consuming than the restoration process which may be necessary if logs are left unprotected. Damage to unprotected logs can begin in 5 to 10 years depending upon the type of log, exposure, weather conditions and type of finish originally applied.

If more intensive restoration is necessary, our team of skilled professionals will use the utmost care to restore your home to its natural beauty.

We repair all areas damaged by fungal decay, insects or extreme weathering and will apply a wood preservative to prevent further deterioration.

We believe in prevention and maintenance, and we offer annual inspections at no cost to our customers.
